Mills Dockyard History

Founded on the Erewash Canal, Mills Dockyard has been operated by four generations of the Mills Family with Amos Mills establishing the business around 1895 concentrating on wooden barge building, construction of houseboats and building rowing skiffs for hire at nearby Trent Lock.

The boatyard is currently operated by Amos’s Great Grandson Steve Mills who has over 40 years of experience dry-docking and repairing all types of canal craft including wooden boat restoration.

Over the year’s the dockyard has seen a change away from repairing wooden boats, once common on the canals and rivers, to having to cater for the different maintenance aspects required for todays modern narrow and wide beam craft.  The Yard is pleased to act as a central hub for most of these requirements.

The Yard continues to be used for Steve to restore vintage wooden boats which has become a specialist service in this modern world.
